5 out of 5 stars Great so far   March 12, 2010
James Davis (Selma, CA USA)
I bought this after some research and talking with a sales rep when they mentioned better integration with Google voice was on the way shortly. I haven't seen that yet but I'm not worried since I'm still waiting to get my number ported. Everything so far works exactly like its advertised. I got to cancel my home phone but still have regular line capability through my internet connection with using my old phones. That saves us about $45 a month so although it was a significant investment it will pay for itself before the end of the year. Great product.

5 out of 5 stars Easy as Plug-and-play   March 12, 2010
James M. Leaman
Out of the box, connect wiring as per instructions, turn it on and wait a few minutes until the device formats and downloads updates, and it's ready to go.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent Call Quality   March 12, 2010
M. Thompson
I was really excited to get my Telo and was surprised how easy it was to set up, but I've had it for almost three months now and, despite 4 calls and an email to tech support they can't resolve my inconsistent call quality issues. Sometimes it works perfectly, but about 25% of the time the call fails or is so broken that I hang up. They've recommended different QoS settings, different setups with the wiring, but nothing works. I've tested my internet connection numerous times for both speed and quality using [...], [...], and a few different VoIP testing services and my connection quality always gets high marks, so it's not that. I love the concept, but if it only works 75% of the time, I can't keep it.

4 out of 5 stars HOW OOMA REALLY WORKS.   March 10, 2010
T. Puckett
First of all this is probably the best quality VOIP I have ever talked on. The question is: Will they remain in business?

From research my understanding is that if you have an Ooma and live in Dallas TX, and I make a call on my Ooma it will ultimately connect to your Ooma before being sent to it's final destination making it a local call for the Company Ooma. They don't tell you that someone else could actually be using your bandwidth to make a call.

I have not had a bandwidth problem yet, and it may because there are not enough users, I understand that if I were to call Dallas and there not be an Ooma user there to route my call through as a local call then Ooma Corporation pays for the call (like regular long distance charges)

So if not enough people buy Ooma, it seems they could go out of business because they are having to pay for long distance phone calls themself.

That being said if you can purchase it for under $200 and put it on a credit card incase they go out of business, if they last at least a year then you have gotten your money's worth.

I have only owned this a short time, but right now I am satisfied. (I have a feeling that the $12 yearly "regulatory fee" actually goes into Oomas pocket) If Magic Jack had to pay $12 a year in fees and they only charge $19.95......well you figure it out. (by the way Magic Jack quality can't begin to compare with this)

5 out of 5 stars So far works great, but needed to activate over the phone.   March 10, 2010
K. Cone (Burke, VA)

A lot of people have written about being unable to activate the ooma online, getting an error code of 1000/300. I tried several browsers on both a mac and a pc and nothing. I called customer service twice- the first rep sounded like he was a complete noob. Very nice but just was struggling a bit with my problem. The second rep seemed to have been through this before so he was very helpful. I write all of this (on top of the voip unit working great so far) because this is part of the unit setup. The packaging materials say it only takes 15 minutes to set up, but for many people getting the error, it takes much longer. Also, once you have tried the activation process on the ooom website and fail, you *do not* have to reissue your credit card info, they already have it. Also, when you initially try to activate, you will see a list of phone numbers available for you to choose - if you have your heart set on a particular phone number you see and the online activation does not complete, wait 10 minutes, *then* call a rep because phone numbers are reserved for 10 minutes during the online process. During that 10 minutes, a rep cannot activate your ooma with that particular phone number until it is released after the 10 minute hold time.

The unit itself is incredibly light, you can change the brightness of the lights on the unit or just turn off all lighting completely. If online activation had actually worked, then yes, it would have taken 5 minutes to set up. Connect the ooma to a ruoter/modem, connect your favorite phone to the ooma, and you're set. The ooma has its own unique ring tone that can't be changed.

The credit card info is for the free two months of Premiere service, which you have to sign up for - it's a gimmick but you can then cancel before the two months are up, no charge to your credit card. It's about $10 a month or about $120 a year (for a one year contract) but they send you a free ooma handset, which hasn't been reviewed very well.

With the rising costs of cable/optical internet (i.e. the Evil Fios) the ooma makes sense for me. Fios is raising the minimum internet speed to 15/5 from the earlier 10/2 available (purposely unannounced to customers, mailings will be sent out in April to notify current subscribers about the PRICE INCREASE) in a bundle for $99/mo. Now the minimum for existing customers is $109.99 for the bundle (TV/internet/phone) and with so many cell phones out there, who needs a home line anymore? For $85/mo I get Fios TV and internet and then I have the ooma, and it will pay for itself.

Don't pay more than $200 for this unit. The price continues to drop. I still think $200 is overpriced as it is.
