5 out of 5 stars Canono wireless printer   March 11, 2010
Tilo J. Haas
The printer was easy to set up and does excellently what I bought it for. A bit noisy and a bit slow but does a very good job and the print is very, very good. I use it for a PC, a Mac and Ubuntu. Works without a hitch.

5 out of 5 stars The Canon MP990 meets my needs perfectly   March 6, 2010

For my needs this has been an excellent purchase at an outstanding price through Amazon.

I began shopping several months ago for a printer to replace a very old HP deskjet for three primary reasons:

1. All-in-one capabilities (document print/copy/scan/fax) - This printer does all of these very well for me. There is no built-in fax, but I do not have a land phone-line in the house. I can accomplish the fax function by using the scanner, then using an on-line service to fax. This may or may not be acceptable to you, but I knew this going into the purchase and am fine with this approach.

2. "Closing the Loop" on digital photography - over the last few years, I have become a serious amateur digital photographer. In general, I do not think that printing at home is more cost effective than using a local lab or on-line service to get prints (and what I have seen of ink consumption for this printer so far has reenforced this belief). I also do not expect to be able to match the output quality of the pros at my local camera shop. That said, the photo printing capabilities of this printer do allow me to match the quality of the local Walgreens for prints up to 8x10. And most importantly, for a very low price has enabled me to learn a great deal about color correction, print resolutions, etc. The immediate feedback provided by the high-quality prints from this printer has allowed me to experiment in near real-time and has really helped me improve my overall photography. For the few pictures I take that I will want the very highest quaility output for (or sizes larger than 8x10), I will go to the local camera shop for pro treatment (after doing a test print on this printer). If I need a large number of prints made, will likely head to Walgreens or use an online service to save cost. For everything else, this printer does a fine job for me.

3. Wireless capabilities - I do most of my office and photo work on a laptop, and generally prefer to work in a room in the house far from where the printer sits. I found wireless extremely easy to set up. I am running Windows Vista.

I did some comparison shopping, and picked this printer over the Epson near-equivalent due primarily to the excellent on-line reviews and the execellent low price of this Canon (when factoring in the significant rebate offered). Can't say I wouldn't have been equally happy with the Epson, but I can very highly recommend this printer if your needs are similar to mine.

One general note (and I suspect that this may be true for any brand/model of printer you buy if you are new to printing digital photographs): I am still working on understanding color correction (what you see on the screen = what you get from the printer). I am using photoshop elements 7, and by lots of reading and tweaking settings in multiple application windows am getting to the point were I am able somewhat repeatedly to get acceptably close to my amateur eye. Expect to spend some time with this.

4 out of 5 stars Good but could be better   March 5, 2010

This is a good printer but could be a REALLY good printer. I used to have a MP970 but I gave it to my daughter and bought the 990. For some unfathomable reason they took the button off the control panel that allows you to switch from front paper feed to rear paper feed. Now you have to go through a complicated series of menu items, if you can find them, to do the same thing you used to be able to do with the push of a button.

I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.6 and MS Office for Mac. I have not been able to install the on-screen users manual.

Finally, the printer doesn't support WPA/WPA2 encryption if you want to go wireless. Since I'm unwilling to reconfigure my wireless network, I had to go with the wired configuration.

4 out of 5 stars Not Up to Expectations   February 24, 2010

Advantages:
A very clean look that matches my new iMac beautifully. Great place for a coffee cup.
The scanner is fast and produces very high quality images.
Ink installation and setup no problem. Utility programs work well. Advantage: It will warn you but continue to print until the ink cartridges are totally empty, unlike some other printers. The screen is good and the little wheel control is only moderately annoying.
Text printing fast and clean. Duplex works well but really slows things. Quirk: If duplex is selected and you print only one sheet, it still turns the page over and thinks about things for 30 or 40 seconds before giving you your page. No hassel driver download from the web.
No comments: WiFi or SD card use.

Disadvantages:
Quality of color image printing on plain paper is way below what I get from a HP7580.
Speed is modest at best. Can be ridiculously slow. A 20 page magazine article with two color figures printed at "better" image quality on both sides took 17 mins.
But who is in a hurry- it looks good.

2 out of 5 stars Uses too much ink   February 24, 2010

I had the MP980 for about one year and I am very disappointed. It uses way too much ink and its driver software support (for Mac OS) is not very good. It's color is not very accurate and has a over saturated red/pinkish color.
