 Worst printer I ever owned September 3, 2010

Hard to initially set up wirelessly, I'm using Windows 7. Every 10th print demand jammed up the print que, requiring "troubleshooting" function of Windows to unjam; I became the only one in my family who could figure out how to unjam the que, thus a full time (unpaid) printer IT guy. Every 5 paper misfed, came out wrinkled and/or torn. Unit is huge, I hit my arm on the cassette lid and knocked it off 100 times or more. When it printed, excellent quality, decent speed, but LOUD feed, LOUD everything. One good thing: miserly on ink, easy to replace. Nevertheless, initially, printer would go to sleep mode, unable to wake it up (reinstalled software to fix this). Another dumb design: To wake up machine, you touch the screen; DON'T hit the power button (like every other machine we know how to wake up) or you'll be put through 5 minutes of self-tests...that killed about 4 hours of time for me, plus more for family. Finally, while leaning on back right of the machine to check on some cords, the scanner glass pane cracked--it's extremely thin/fragile. Rendered copy/scan functions useless, had to toss the machine. Happiest day of my life. Am considering using it on target range to take out aggression.

I don't know if other reviews have mentioned this. I just got off a chat with HP Support. I was frustrated that even with a genuine HP XL black cartridge recently installed, when I try to print ANYTHING, even grayscale, black ink only, black and white documents only - - IT WILL NOT PRINT because the yellow just ran out. Doesn't matter that the black has probably 1800 more pages of ink, and I only want it to print a black ink document only. It ceases all printing if one of the color cartriges has no ink inside. I personally find this ridiculous. And limiting. What if you enjoyed the features of color ink for a time, but choose to go to black only since the vast majority of office documents use black, and financially you don't want to replace the colors at this point?? You now don't have a printer. The other CON is that when the paper runs out, when you try to place any paper into the printer, if the printer is still trying to feed, there is not a good feel for how far in the paper should go. It loses it's "backstop" and you have no idea if the printer is going to catch it (too far out) or if the paper is too far into the unit. Until you have experienced it, you might think I'm crazy. It makes printing less satisfying when you feel stressed not knowing if you loaded the paper properly. The print quality is nice, it is fast, I really like the touch screen, and so far it has been reliable...but I think the fact that you must have all the cartridges containing ink before it will operate would prevent me from recommending it.

This printer is a piece of crap! The design of it isn't bad, but the software and firmware is horrible.
When trying to print photos with certain software or from Windows own picture viewer the printer spazzes out as soon as you try to print. It asks you to reset it and displays it is off line if connect to a network.
It also seems that the printer needs to be reset, network wise, every 3+ months or as it some how looses it's connect through the network even though the printer itself states there is a connection.
The printer also goes through a lengthy process of "Cleaning the print head" or aligning them every time the printer is restarted.
Don't assume that I don't know my way around electronics, and that I'm cursed by them. I most certainly know my bits and bytes about computers and electronics.
Don't waste your time and money on this printer, suck an egg HP!

I purchased this printer for use with OS X. I would highly recommend no one else do the same.
HP software is buggy, and constantly crashes. Whenever I get it to be stable, it generally does not work. The scanning software is mostly broken, and faxing is a crap-shoot at best.
The printing itself is decent enough, although it is very slow. It also takes several minutes for the machine to startup before it will actually print. If all you really need is printing, you should probably avoid the all-in-one machine, as the extra features will just be add cost to the device, but not really provide anything of value.

I purchased this off of Amazon in February of 2010. Its now Aug 2010. After several calls to the Tech Support and over 6 hours on the phone with them (mostly on hold while they "researched"). They sent me out a new model of the same printer which came with new problems. My initial problem was it went through 2 sets of ink with minimal printing being done. And the print outs look bad (my thought was a bad print head, but they don't listen). I bought this printer in hopes that spending more then $50 on a printer would have better results. This one promised to use less ink. I am currently on hold with them after 4 calls tonight and working on 3 hours. The support line has had me repeat steps over and over to no avail. They had me unplug my printer and wait for 30 minutes while on hold with them. My warning is DON'T BUY an HP Printer (unless you like being on hold).
